Living in the Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic, foreign-source income is not taxed, with one exception: foreign financial income becomes taxable after three years of residence, except for pensions and the Law 171-07 regime. You live with power cuts, hurricanes from June to November and uneven healthcare outside Santo Domingo and Santiago.

Who it fits
- Retirees and passive-income earners with foreign pensions or income
- Anyone wanting beaches and direct flights to Europe and North America
- Anyone accepting cars, heat and Spanish in daily life
Cost of living and cities
Santo Domingo concentrates government offices, private hospitals, international schools and city life. Santiago de los Caballeros, in the north, is the second city and an economic centre. Punta Cana, Las Terrenas, Sosúa or Cabarete draw expats and remote workers for the sea, with reduced services off-season.
The currency is the Dominican peso; the US dollar circulates widely in tourism and property. In some areas, power cuts are frequent: a generator or inverter and a water tank are often part of the home.
A car is almost essential, driving is brisk and secondary roads uneven. Hurricane season runs from June to November. Our grid scores infrastructure 5/10 and space 7.5/10. Check insurance, building quality and access to care before choosing a coast.
Personal tax and residence
The system is territorial: Dominican-source income is taxed on a scale our grid summarises as 0–25%. There is one important exception: from the third year of residence, foreign-source financial and investment income becomes taxable for residents.
Pensions, and people settled under the Law 171-07 regime, benefit from exemptions; check their exact scope for your profile. Tax residence is acquired after more than 182 days of presence within a 12-month period.
A 3% succession tax applies to assets located in the Dominican Republic, and to movable assets abroad if the deceased was domiciled in the country. For property or a sizeable portfolio, have a local notary cost out the transfer.
Family, school and healthcare
Santo Domingo and Santiago concentrate bilingual and international schools; some coastal areas such as Punta Cana or Cabarete also have private schools, with a narrower choice. Homeschooling is a grey area in our grid: the framework is poorly documented.
Private hospitals in Santo Domingo and Santiago cover most needs; outside big cities, quality varies widely. Private health insurance, ideally with evacuation, is the baseline for a foreign family.
Visa, pace and daily life
Residence usually comes in two steps, temporary then permanent. Law 171-07 provides routes for retirees (pension), passive-income earners (stable passive income) and investors, with tax and customs benefits. Amounts and documents change: check them with the General Directorate of Migration.
Plan apostilles, certified translations and medical tests. Processing takes several months and often requires being on site at several stages.
Day to day, Spanish opens doors outside tourist areas. The pace is warm and loud, and social life happens largely outdoors. Numerous direct flights to Europe and North America make trips easy.
The Dominican Republic suits a retiree with a foreign pension who wants the sea and direct flights. An investor living on foreign financial income should cost out the tax due from the third year before moving.
Common mistakes: forgetting that foreign financial income is taxed after three years; ignoring the 3% succession tax; choosing a coast with no health plan; underestimating a generator and water tank in the housing budget.
